Twilight of Lake Woebegotten door Harrison Geillor
This rather bizarre but highly entertaining parody will certainly appeal to “Twilight” fans. I have not read “Twilight” nor do I intend to, but I still found this book to be quite interesting. Bonnie is a very bad girl who does a very bad thing, actually two things, and her mother sends her to live with her father in Minnesota, quite a change from sunny California. She becomes enamored with Edwin, a vampire, and plots to win his love and become a vampire. For added interest, the author has included were-bears and vampire hunters. The novel is told in two voices, that of a narrator and Bonnie’s journal. Together, readers get a good idea of what the characters are like as well as keep up with the action of the story. It’s a well-written parody, perhaps even better than the original. Just remember, not all people are good, and not all vampires are bad. Enjoy!… (meer)

TheYodamom | 9 andere besprekingen | Jan 29, 2016 | This is a mash-up of the bestselling spoken word audiobook series for adults Lake Wobegon, mixed in with the current zombie phenomenon. Lake Wobegon is a fictional town in Minnesota. The author Garrison Keillor offers humorous and touching monologues of bizarre incidents that have occurred in the town. Typically the people of Lake Wobegon are above average men, women, and children. In the Zombies of Lake Woebegotten the similar above average people have zombies infiltrating their Minnesota town following a meteorite that flew over Earth. The story includes some distinctive characters, faced with humorous and violent situations.
I respect this retelling for what it is. Those not familiar with Lake Wobegon may find it a decent read, with the understanding it is far from a typical zombie tale. The characters are outlandish: a serial killer who now does zombie patrols, a Norse Viking who goes after zombie bears, a dominatrix who is ex-military, and a mayor who is physically attracted to his car. This is most definitely an adult book. It is humorous, but I didn’t find it laugh-out-loud funny. The second half of the book was better; the first half of the book wasn’t told in sequential order and I had a hard time following the storyline. Another interesting addition to the zombie genre for fans of everything zombie.
The narrator of the audiobook sounded old and raspy, which was sometimes annoying. However, the voices he did for the characters were really well done. For lovers of Lake Wobegon you have to listen to the audio to get the full experience of this parody. ☊ ★★★★☆
