Ralph Giordano was born on March 23, 1923 in Hamburg, Germany. He was persecuted as a young man for his Jewish heritage. He was repeatedly interrogated by the Gestapo and survived the Nazi-era along with his parents and brother by hiding in a friend's cellar. After the war, he became a communist toon meer but left the German Communist Party in 1957 because of his dislike for Stalinism. He was a journalist and author. He joined the West German broadcaster WDR as a journalist in 1964 and remained there until 1988. He became a freelance writer, chronicling his experiences in Nazi Germany. He wrote 23 books during his lifetime including Die Bertinis, which tells the story of a German-Italian family from the late 19th century and into World War II. Recently, he became a prominent critic of Germany's failure to integrate Muslim immigrants. He died after being hospitalized following a fall at home on December 10, 2014 at the age of 91.
