Willard Glazier published his ‘Heroes of Three Wars’ in 1880 as a patriotic and biographic piece. He offers a full biography of 80 men: soldiers, sailors and marines; and the three wars are the Revolution, Mexican War, and Civil War. ‘Heroes’ presents a well-written work of its kind, but is very questionable as to history. He gives a few details of the personal life, family and education of his subjects then expands on their wartime efforts. His description of battles and campaigns is stronger than his biographic detail.

Although Glazier was conscientious, we must remember the accuracy of sources in his day. He picks up some details from Parson Weems who was known to invent tales for his books. But Glazier manages to represent a fine example of flag-waving from his day. He adds two or three events to show the character of qualities of his chosen heroes, but these had also grown over the years.

I’m sorry to say that the overall work is one that cannot be recommended unless all its shortcomings are expected and it is read as a period piece.
