- Jeanne Glidewell, a 2006 kidney and pancreas transplant recipient, lives with her husband, Robert, a Vietnam Veteran, in Bonner Springs, Kansas. Jeanne has had many magazine articles published and worked as a staff writer for a monthly publication called County Magazine in Leavenworth, Kansas. She enjoys fishing, wildlife photography, traveling and volunteers as a Life Mentor for the Gift of Life program in Kansas City, mentoring future transplant recipients. Jeanne will be crossing off the number one item on her bucket list in August 2013 when she and Bob go on an African safari, where she plans to wear out her camera. I'm a bit late to the Ripple Effect series, this is the fourth book but only the first I've read and I can safely say this can be read as a introduction to the series or as a standalone. Following the adventures of retired couple Rapella and her husband, Rip, as they travel around the US in their RV, they find themselves in the middle of a mystery wherever they go. Rapella, a charmingly naive chatterbox, made for an entertaining sleuth (and I enjoyed Itsy as the sidekick!) and I was drooling over the beautiful scenery on their cruise. Add in a mouthy cockatoo, a sweet St Bernard and a zippy, lively plot and there was a lot to like!
The plot, surrounding an anonymous tip that a local woman's death was not due to natural causes and is later determined to be murder. Suspicion is thrown onto Sydney, one of Rip's cardiac nurses and the niece of the recently deceased woman. There were many facets to the plot, from the seemingly "haunted" house to the squabbling siblings to the possible cache of missing gold and I was sucked in from the start. From the breathtaking scenery on the cruise that made me drool to the many lovable (and not so lovable) characters that jumped off the page and the hijinks that Rapella got into had me chuckling (especially the Uber part!) While I read a lot of cozy mysteries, there have been few that were as fun as this and and I'm definitely going to read the other books in the series.

My Thoughts:
I had a really hard time rating this book. It was a well written cozy mystery but that was my entire problem...it was TOO cozy for me...but I couldn't bring myself to NOT finish it. There was not nearly enough of a "mystery" and way too much rattling on about everyday life. How these people with no training ever manage to become involved with these cases that are not only dangerous but obviously best left to the police is the biggest "mystery" to me. That being said...it was more than likely an interesting book to those that are fans of the sub-genre.… (meer)

A short and light-hearted mystery that can be finished in one sitting. It should appeal to middle-aged women with children.

Lexi makes several off-putting remarks that can be seen as fatphobic (comments on the weight of several characters) and homophobic (comments regarding cross-dressing). In general, she comments a lot about weight - if that's something you do not wish to read about, I would avoid this book. She's also quite judgemental of people she does not care for, but turns the other way when it comes to her and the people she likes. And, she makes many silly decisions over the course of the book.
There's also a lot going on the mystery itself. I think it would have benefitted from being tighter, removing some of the red herrings and clues instead of trying to develop all of them.
That being said, I was still interested in sleuthing out the mystery despite all these faults. It was just difficult for me to become invested in the novel given how much I disliked reading from Lexi's perspective.
