I understand this book isn't for everyone, but as a lover of furniture and dream houses I greatly enjoyed learning about the subject.

More than a dictionary, this is a trove of words used to describe, and the names of the makers of, furniture. Great reference, with pictures and indications of the influences which affect the form, function and character of these extensions of human bodies, during the last eight and a half centuries. The final Section has a Chart showing the Periods, types, materials and craftsmen from 100 to 1950.

Period:
10th-12th c. Saxon and Norman.
13th-14th c. Mediaeval
15th c. Late Mediaeval
16th c. 1500-1558 - Early Tudor
16th c. 1558-1600 - Late Tudor or Elizabethan
17th c. 1600-1640 - Early Stuart or Jacobean
17th c. 1640-1660 - Puritan
17th c. 1660-1700 - Restoration; William and Mary
18th c. 1700-1730 - Queen Anne and Early Georgian
18th c. 1730-1800 - Georgian - this is the Golden Age of cabinet-making
19th c. 1800-1820 - Greek Revival / Regency; infl. of architects/ English Empire style
19th c. 1820-1837 - Pre-Victorian; Gothic revival begins
19th c. 1837-1900 - Victorian; William Morris 1860's; L'Art Nouveau 1890's.

A cathedral is destroyed in a zeppelin raid. Will it be rebuilt traditionally or in modern style. The benefactor has his own ideas. Not the story of Coventry cathedral but quite a paralel by a good design writer
