[…] Pour finir en beauté ce petit tour d’horizon, un livre splendide, à couverture cartonnée et prix modique ($19 25), La peinture indienne, nous initie aux charmes légendaires, sensuels et raffinés de l’art pictural en Inde, aussi varié que les peuples qui ont balayé de tous temps ce sous-continent au cours des siècles.
Des immenses fresques peintes au VIe siècle dans les grottes d'Ajantâ — montrant de tendres amoureux enlacés — aux miniatures richement détaillées des états musulmans du Deccan du XVIIe siècle, il y a un monde que seule la géographie de l’Inde semble unifier. Ces deux pôles représentent néanmoins "les deux phases d'une même tradition artistique" qui continua à se renouveler jusqu'au début du XIXe siècle.
Ce très beau livre illustré de quelque 80 reproductions en couleur, présente donc dans un premier temps la peinture de la période Classique (IIe au XVIe siècles), y compris celle des XIIIe et XIVe siècles du sud du pays alors que le nord et le centre de l’Inde sont secoués par les invasions islamiques : puis la Miniature — antérieure aux Mogols, la peinture mogole, la peinture du Deccan (Etats d’Ahmanagar, de Bîjâpour et de Golconde), les écoles de Rajasthan et du Haut-Pendjab. Le tout est accompagné d'un texte explicatif fouillé mais parfois complexe.
Cette collection, "Les Trésors de l’Asie", comprend aussi les peintures chinoise, japonaise, persane, arabe et égyptienne. (Angèle DAGENAIS)
