Based on the description, I expected an intriguing mystery. Instead, the book is 80% a very detailed description of the main character, Ian's career in finance. Vivienne appears briefly about 1/3 of the way through the book and the circumstances of her disappearance are brushed over within a few pages before Ian is back to work.

In addition to dry writing, the story jumps back and forth between present day and the past with little distinction. I sometimes read a few paragraphs before realizing there had been a time jump.

I found the characters difficult to relate to and the plot severely lacking anything to keep my attention. There were also a few random subtle bigoted comments throughout and it was difficult to tell whether these were part of the characters themselves or the author's own opinions coming through. I don't know anything about the author to say either way, but this rubbed me the wrong way.

I can't say I'd recommend this book to others.

As an American, I thought the dialog was very British and I couldn't relate to it.
