I’m an editor by day and a romance writer by night, at least on a good day. I’m more of a procrastinator by day and despairing eater of chocolate by night when inspiration doesn’t flow and my day-job clients are driving me to insanity. Go ahead and guess which of these is more common.

My steady childhood diet of pulp science fiction, classic tales of adventure, and romance novels surreptitiously borrowed from my grandmother eventually led me to writing; I picked up my first M/M romance a few years ago and I’ve been enjoying the genre as a reader and an author ever since.

I'm a huge fan of Deven and the Dragon by Eliot Grayson—it’s the first book I read that seemed like a real romance novel (with the story centered on a romance) while also being set in a non-violent, non-traumatizing fantasy world. Deven and Fiora (a dragon shifter, who’s awkward and has a perpetual head cold) are adorable.

So I had expectations when I learned of a second book in the series, Corin and the Courtier. I did like this book, but the characters and the plot are so different and less my cup of tea. Most of the plot is the two characters in a castle either trying to resist having sex or having sex. (They have some shared history that causes Corin to question his motives and resist. For a while…) The sex is more aggressive with lots of “You are mine” type language. But it’s a good read if you’re into that.… (meer)

This is a cute short that allowed me to see what everyday life is like for the two couples from the first 2 books and meet or learn a little more about other peripheral characters. I enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading the next story: [b:First Blood|56652660|First Blood (Mismatched Mates #2.6)|Eliot Grayson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1610507619l/56652660._SY75_.jpg|88163748][bc:First Blood|56652660|First Blood (Mismatched Mates #2.6)|Eliot Grayson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1610507619l/56652660._SY75_.jpg|88163748]… (meer)

Hey, this is great. Found another Vino and Veritas novel. #4 in the series of 19.

Undercover is just as enjoyable as other Vino and Veritas series novels I've read, and once again, has the added benefit of introducing me to a new author - great idea publishers.

Eliot Grayson gives us the story of undercover FBI agent Alec and ex-grad student who regularly changes the neon shade of his hair, Gabe. They become aware of each other among the bookshelves of the Vino and Veritas bookstore and bar.

There were moments when the mix of FBI, yoga mats, bookshelves and neon hair was going to be too much farce for my taste, but Grayson held it in and gave us a solid romantic comedy.

Brought to Light probably can’t count as a cozy fantasy romance because of its violence… but I never felt anxious about the main characters while reading it, and I loved the romance. It’s between a hard-hearted human hitman and his fairy barista target. The fairy, Linden, is hiding out in the human realm because an evil fairy sorcerer is out to get him. The human, Callum, is hired to kill him but immediately feels that something is off about the situation and that Linden cannot possibly be guilty of anything.

Most of the violence is other creatures attacking Linden, and Callum defending him. Linden has a small amount of magic that he cannot use well but otherwise is “useless,” he thinks, and is from the servant class in the fairy realm. I liked that the story shows Callum and his friends valuing Linden simply for who he is and not his skills or position. There’s mention of Callum’s past as a soldier and hitman, and it’s kind of a fine line between knowing that he’s a murderer and that murder is wrong, but wanting him to find happiness. He knows he is bad, and watching him assess himself and change for the better is part of what made me like the story. (Note, I have zero knowledge of how hitmen operate, so I had to assume the author’s depiction was accurate.)

I stayed up way too late to finish this. It was a page turner for me, with plenty of action and the romance developing along the way.
