The Patriots and the People: The Rebellion of 1837… door Allan Greer
Greer's work would perhaps be better if he didn't flippantly shrug off Oullet's far more in depth research. There are some fantastic insights into Quebec society for the ear, but (in my mind) the book struggles to drive home that the people of rural Quebec were dynamic and enterprising who joined the rebellion of their own accord and weren't bilked into rebellion by the Montreal liberal class. I think Greer really cherry picks his examples in order to make his point and his book suffers on account of it.… (meer)
½Certainement l'un des meilleurs essais historiques jamais écrit tant par la qualité de sa structure narrative que par la radicalité de la thèse dans l'historiographie sur les Rébellions 1837-38. Les habitants du Bas-Canada n'auraient selon lui pas été des témoins passifs mais des acteurs de première ordre. L'un des premiers chercheurs à se pencher sur la question du républicanisme au Québec.
Bonne synthèse. Un peu canadian et donc, politiquement orienté comme recherche.
