Great story but where's the rest of it. I can't give a cliffhanger 5 stars.

I was given Pretty Poisonby the author through the Goodreads M/M Romance Group’s Don’t Buy My Love review program for an honest opinion. The story is told in third person through the eyes of Noah a handicapped shifter.

Pretty Poison is a different type of shifter story. These shifters aren’t the nice romanticized shifters in most books. The ones I’ve read are really humans that happen to turn in to wolves and are more aggressive humans in wolves clothing. These shifters are much more connected to their wolf side and it rules their community. They work at manual labor, leaving school when they hit puberty and start to shift. They are feared by the human population so they stay to themselves. These are not nice shifters, but strong, secretive and tend to be a law unto themselves. They are very traditional and that’s where Wade the new alpha comes in. He wants to change the old ways.

Wade is strong, powerful and cunning. He has a plan to change how his pack works and to do that he needs a mate, a specific mate. Not a mate chosen out of love or destiny like most other shifter stories, but a mate of convenience and planning. That mate is Noah, a twenty year old handicapped wolf who lives with his renegade family that includes his dad and three brothers. When Noah was a toddler he fell eight stories and cracked his skull. Many operations and setbacks later he walks with a leg brace and arm crutches. He takes silver shots to keep him from shifting in order for his metal parts holding his bones together don’t disappear during a shift. When Wade and his betas come to Noah’s family’s home to have the mating pact agreement fulfilled, Wade chooses Noah as his mate to the horror of his family.

Noah agrees in order to save his family’s life and he’s locked away in a room. He is given no choice of what happens to him, and no information other than his medicine is poison. Wade mates with him but only hangs around to have sex. Noah is not given any freedom. The story progresses and Noah gradually gets more freedom and we find out that Wade is not the asshole he appeared to be in the beginning although he’s still a jerk. He develops feelings for Noah more quickly than Noah does for him. I think in part because Noah isn’t told about what is happening he remains resistant. In a way Noah only knew what he grew up with and the lies he’d been told by his family. Wade might have had an easier time if he sat down and talked to Noah, but he chose not to.

One of the things that kept surprising me was that I thought longer spans of time had passed in the story, but most of the changes happened within a two-three week period which I found to be astonishingly fast. I also got the impression that since Noah was isolated from his family and locked away, that he could’ve been suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. His change in viewpoint was conveniently fast.

I liked the author’s take on wolf shifters, it was very different from the romanticized versions I’ve read. But, saying that, it took me awhile to get used to her wolves. In the beginning I was decidedly uncomfortable and did not like them at all. I thought they were controlling bullies. Eventually we are shown why Wade is acting the way he is to Noah, which makes perfect sense, but Wade is not the communicative type so it’s easy to misinterpret his reasons.

Noah is stubborn, but also a fighter. Despite his physical handicaps he keeps soldiering on. He has this bad habit though of making decisions that are not always good for him. He admits that he pushes his body to his detriment at times. One of those times comes near the end of the story and I understand Wade’s fear, Noah gets pregnant. This is mpreg people. The male wolves can get pregnant. This is another aspect of this world I wish the author went into more detail, instead the idea of mpreg was kind of thrown in for effect. Personally I don’t understand why Noah couldn’t wait. His pack was safe and the other packs weren’t mentioned in the story so we don’t know how they felt about Noah. I liked that the author dealt with someone who is handicapped and doesn’t miraculously get cured of all ailments. Realistically Noah will be handicapped for the rest of his life.

I wish the author had gone into more depth about the shifter world she created. It was unique but the story was mostly about the developing relationship between Noah and Wade. Noah’s relationship to the pack was covered a bit, but not all that much. I felt a bit cheated by the lack of detail in a very interesting world, so I’ll have to take stars off for that.

Finally the one thing I don’t want to forget to mention is the sex. Boy was it hot, especially the knotting/tying scene; that was scorching!

Pretty Poison is a unique take on wolf shifters and their world, but too bad there wasn’t enough info about it which made the story, for me, half finished. The time span seemed a bit too fast to me to be realistic. Noah tended to take matters into his own hands instead of deciding on things with Wade who was his mate. In a way he undermined Wade’s authority so I don’t think that was too great. Also the mpreg, that was kind of thrown in the story without explanation. I would rate this book at 3.5 stars, but because of the uniqueness of the world created and the reaction the author was able to get out of me toward the behavior of the wolf shifters I have to raise the stars to 4 Stars.

(meer)
