The author believes that the Armed Forces are making a mistake trying to integrate servicwomen so completely into the fighting force. She believes that women should not serve in combat, but also that women are currently serving in too many combat related assignments and that they are weakening America's fighting force. The book is not fottnoted, however there is a list of sources consulted in the back. This is an opinion piece and does not qualify as an academic study.

Useful for the historical information, and the state of the controversy at the time of writing (2000).
I don't remember enough at this late date since reading it to give any more details.

Gutmann has a valid point concerning military gender norming. Unfortunately when the facts don't support her theory she isn't opposed to lying to spread the word.
