This is the second (and as far as I know) last book by Tom de Haan - as far as I know because this is a pseudonym and de Haan could be happily writing bestsellers today under a different name. This book takes us back into the fantasy world of Brychmachrye - a pre-modern world of chivalry, stratified social class and beauty, where drama and poetry are being invented by a fabulously beautiful boy with a social conscience. De Haan's first book is an achingly romantic and heartfelt story - this doesn't quite match up. The social conscience and politics are drawn rather crudely, and a romance between an egotistical boy and the woman who can't ultimately resist, against her better judgement, is not enough to entice the reader. A wonderful book!!! Sad, enchanting and totally engrossing. For anyone who likes to escape into a completely believable fantasy world but could do with a break from talking dragons.
