Over de Auteur

Christine Hallett is Professor of Nursing History at the University of Manchester. She is Chair of the UK Association for the History of Nursing and President of the European Association for the History of Nursing, and holds Fellowships of the Royal Society of Medicine and the Royal Society for the toon meer Arts. She is a trained nurse, with PhDs in both Nursing and History. She practised as a nurse in the North of England from 1985 to 1989, before moving into teaching and research. Her most recent work focuses on the nurses of the First World War. Among her many publications are: Containing Trauma: Nursing Work in the First World War (Manchester University Press, 2009), Veiled Warriors: Allied Nurses of the First World War (Oxford University Press, 2014) and Nurse Writers of the Great War (Manchester University Press, 2016). toon minder

This is a well written, well researched book with numerous footnotes for further reading if desired. However, as I read through the book, the material became redundant. Throughout WWI the military nurses worked consistently under trying conditions: short staff, long hours, too many patients, short of supplies, physical danger, etc. They also were not given the respect they deserved professionally or recognized for their contribution.

Given the above, I would still recommend reading this book because it does provide a great deal of insight into a facet of WWI that is not well covered in the literature.… (meer)
