This is a great picture book for 3rd and 4th graders. It's a clever story about a boy who loses his hat and has to face the dreaded keeper of the lost and found, Mr. Rumkowsky. The boy's mom chides him for losing the hat because his grandmother made it for him, but when the boy finds his hat it turns out to be his mother's hat--and exact copy that she lost when she was a student at the same school. In a great little wordless follow-up, the reader sees Mr. Rumkowsky finding the boy's actual hat.

This is the seventh book in the Charlie Bumpers series. Charlie is in the fourth grade and it has been a rough year. His friend Hector is being bullied and it is up to Charlie and his friend Tommy to get to the bottom of it. Charlie is sad as well because Hector is moving back to Chile at the end of the school year and he must find a way to keep him in town. I would recommend this for any collection looking for books to show kids that it is right to tell someone if you are another friend are being bullied. The author does a good job of addressing this without being over the top.… (meer)

Charlie Bumpers is a protagonist worth rooting for--well-liked and friendly but not the most popular; bright, but not a know-it-all; a little insecure, but not willing to give into those insecurities. It's those insecurities that make Charlie so likeable. In The Squeaking Skull, Charlie has three challenges this Halloween: 1) deciding what to dress up as, 2) not breaking his little sister's heart because they won't be trick-or-treating together, and 3) getting through a sleepover with friends where they are going to watch the scariest movie in the whole world! Charlie's big brother has the solution for Charlie's sleep over worries; tell Charlie scary stories so that he becomes immune to scary situations. A fun title from a fun series.… (meer)
