John Limond Hart joined the CIA in 1948, serving as the senior agency officer in Korea, Thailand, Morocco, and South Vietnam, managing intelligence collection in China and Cuba, and heading CIA operations in Western Europe from 1968 to 1971. At the end of his career in 1973 he became special toon meer assistant for national security affairs to Secretary of the Treasury George Schultz. In 1976 he was recalled from retirement to study the Nosenko case. He was twice awarded the Distinguished Intelligence Medal. Born in 1920, Hart spent much of his early life in Persia and Albania with his family. World War II interrupted his studies at the University of Chicago. As an Army escort officer and interpreter with the French Second Armored Division, he landed at Normandy in 1944, entered Germany with the U.S. 76th Infantry, and ended his military career as a U.S. Army liaison officer with the French occupation forces in Germany. After the war he resumed his studies in international relations at Chicago and acquired a master's in psychology from George Washington University after retirement.
