Korte biografie
Sophia Peabody was born in Salem, Massachusetts, the third daughter of Nathaniel Peabody, a dentist, and his wife Eliza(beth) Palmer, a teacher. Her older sisters Elizabeth Palmer Peabody and Mary Peabody Mann both became famous educators. She was tutored at home in geography, science, literature, American and European history, theology, and philosophy. She also learned Latin, French, Greek, and Hebrew. She studied art privately with several artists in the Boston area. Her health was delicate from childhood and she traveled to Cuba with Mary in 1833 in hopes of improving it. While she was there, one of her landscape paintings was exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum, a rare accomplishment for a woman. After her return, she distributed her journal of the trip to friends and family. She formally met Nathaniel Hawthorne, who lived with his mother in Salem, in 1836, and they became secretly engaged in 1839. During this time, she continued to paint and draw and illustrated an edition of Hawthorne's story, "The Gentle Boy." The couple married in 1842 and had three children, and she gave up writing and art work. They lived for years in England, Portugal, France, and Italy. After Hawthorne died in 1864, Sophia edited his notebooks for serialized publication in The Atlantic Monthly. Then she began working again on her own writing, taking her letters and journals from the period 1853-1860 and publishing them in a successful travel book, Notes in England and Italy. She published Passages from the English Note-books in 1870, and Passages from the French and Italian Note-books. While living in London with her daughters in 1871, she died from an infectious disease described as "typhoid pneumonia." She has been counted among the earliest Transcendentalists.
