Interesting subject, Henry Chaffey and Annie Fox (later Chaffey) lived in a remote and basic cottage in the mountains between Motueka and Takaka for many years. This is their story, and the stories of the many hard working people who lived, worked, prospected, and supplied goods to this very mountainous and remote part of New Zealand in the first half of the 20th Century. Jim Henderson has crammed a multitude of facts and memories into this book, cobbled together with a sometimes difficult mix of banality, supposition, and quite a lot of flowery prose. Not an easy book to read, but I have got through it (finally) with new knowledge and respect for those early pioneers. Worth a read if that region of New Zealand holds memories or interest for you.… (meer)
