Leo Hershkowitz (1924–2017)

Leo Hershkowitz was born in the Bronx, New York on November 21, 1924. He served in the Army, where he fixed airplane radios in Hawaii. He received a bachelor's degree from Hunter College, a master's degree from Columbia College, and a Ph.D. from New York University. His expertise was New York City toon meer history and the early history of Jews in the city. He began teaching history at Queens College in 1960 and taught there for about 50 years. He also taught at New York University. He wrote several books including Tweed's' New York: Another Look. He died from polycythemia vera, a slow-growing blood cancer, on August 10, 2017 at the age of 92. (Bowker Author Biography) toon minder
