The Adoption door Dave Hill
Great premise and written by someone else, would be a terrific book. This author, however, seems incapable of injecting any emotion into his writing. By the end of the book, I didn't care about any of the characters or "sitting-on-the-edge-of-my-seat" to see what would become of the birth mother. Shame.
It's a pretty good look inside the families surrounding an adoption, but sketches over some of the more fundamental issues (we have adopted children, so perhaps have more perspective than most).I don't want to be too harsh though, because everybody's experiences and story are going to be different. Parts of the book were very hard to read for me - mostly for emotional reasons - and this is perhaps it's greatest victory.
As an adopted mother of two older children (in adoption language over two is 'older') and someone who wants to write about adoption I thought this book would have me bowled over. It did not. The tone is right but it does not pull together as a convincing story. It must be harder to write effectively about adoption than it seems. The media reviews are wildly enthusiastic 'a novelist of note' (Daily Express,'a moving page turner' (Time Out) , 'will have readers sighing and giggling from every page (Independent on Sunday). I am afraid all of this is untrue.
