nonfiction (sewing)
spiral-bound book with several "quick-sew" patterns--half of them don't require putting in zippers relying instead on belts and elastic to create a waist. These are not really my style (I prefer the patterns in her "vintage casual" book) but I can still learn a lot from all of the tips and other content.

I didn't see any instructions for including bra strap holders on the dress straps; that would have been nice considering that I can't look at the photographs without feeling the annoyance of constantly having to adjust my bra straps--because you know they will never just sit perfectly on the rounded ends of one's shoulders. Yes, I can google instructions easily, but including them would have been thoughtful and appreciated.… (meer)

nonfiction; advanced sewing. A manual for experienced sewists wanting to take their sewing to the next level (such as to make your own wedding dress or other formal gown).

The paper patterns included are for structured dresses (as opposed to flowy) suitable for parties or for the office (or for casual outings, if that's your style). She goes over in detail the various fabric choices, how to prep and care for your fabrics, how to alter patterns to suit your body, and dressmaking techniques--including how to line your dress, and how to add boning or preformed cups to help your bodices hold their shape and stay on (about half of the bodices included call for boning, but you have a choice of less-complicated styles to swap in if you prefer). Well worth a purchase if you like the styles and want to tackle a more advanced construction process; less ambitious sewists like myself will pass on these for now (I might suggest her "vintage casual" book instead, which also provides some very stylish patterns for work and play, but often with less-fussy, stretchy fabrics).… (meer)

nonfiction/sewing (I would classify the level as somewhere between beginner and intermediate--practiced, but not perfected; but this is also good for more seasoned sewists who are just interested in some retro patterns). First impression: Man, I could've used this book three days ago when I was finishing my last knit-fabric project. Gertie answers a lot of questions and offers lots of tips for sewing with BOTH woven and knit fabrics (and how to tell them apart, if you are that lost), and how to adjust your patterns so they fit PERFECTLY.

2nd impression (after further study):
I don't know if this would suit a beginner, but she definitely explains a lot of stuff I'd known when I was starting out... plus I'm finding her knit patterns to be awesome staples (sure beats trying to trace/cut apart my old tees to make my own pattern) I've adapted her "pin-up sweater" pattern as a knit jersey t-shirt with great results.
There are also some cool sailor shorts and cigarette pants that I might attempt if I were more skilled, but I will leave those for someone else.

nonfiction/sewing. Super well-done tome from blogger/seamstress superstar Gertie. Would recommend for anyone interested in sewing and vintage style. Patterns are customizable and Gertie offers lots of insight into making things fit just the way you want them to.
