Quirky but entertaining tale of free-spirited Harriet, the adopted daughter of a dysfunctional elderly couple. In chapters narrated by her, and those around her- boss, friend, parents, boyfriend...Harriet starts work and moves out. But there's an unexpected denouement.
Odd but quite gripping.

Weird, quirkly, highly readable little story.
Eric- a mummy's boy teacher and wannabe playwright- makes an unfortunate marriage to the dreadful Violet Stubbs. As the marriage founders, and Eric takes off for a writing retreat in the US, the story moves to those left behind- the sulky, tasteless Violet, Eric's antique-dealer mother- and the lowbrow Stubbs parents.
Truly odd but entertaining.

Contrived, rather weak little story: narrator, Shirley lives am apparently content life, but events from her past emerge- implausibly. Meh....

This put me in mind of Edna O' Brien's 'Country Girls' with a touch of Barbara Comyns.
Set in the 1960s, narrator Eve lives in a dysfunctional family on a rundown Irish chicken farm. Mother is old before her time, worn down by marriage to a taciturn failure of a man and constant care of a large and severely mentally impaired son. Father hangs around the outhouse, ogling his daughter bathing. But with flighty cousin Eileen living with them, Eve's thoughts fixate on music, dances and love...

Following Eve's slightly implausible adventures after she leaves her home for the city...and later London, this is an entertaining enough novel which evokes the somewhat impoverished era. The author doesn't really dwell sufficiently on Eve's feelings; stuff happens and she acts but we never fully grasp what she's thinking.… (meer)
