I enjoyed it. Our hero, Josiah, is a teen who is apprenticed to a Master Fuller in a pseudo-medieval world. As we meet him, he is looking to add a little adventure to his task of monitoring a water-wheel's raising and lowering the large wooden blocks that "full" a length of recently woven cloth. He ends up ruining the cloth and nearly getting himself pummeled to death by those self-same wooden blocks. His master is upset, and his rescuer, a wizard and his familiar, are in need of a traveling companion. And thus Josiah ends up traveling the country for a year serving the wizard.

This is the setup for a travel-log through the world of the book. We get to know the fuller's apprentice, Josiah; the journeyman wizard Elkan; his familar, a donkey named Sar, and a variety of other folk. The various guilds are the basis of the society, and even their naming practices. So we learn about potters, a waulker, farmers, and so on, in this society. The author is clearly well-versed in the crafts represented, which was fascinating in itself.

There is an overarching story that pulls it all together, and the ending was a bit of a surprise - welcome, but not quite expected. I enjoyed this book. It is probably aimed at YA readers, as it shows the growth in our teenaged main character. I recommend it for less-young readers, as well.

I read this on my kindle while rocking a sleepy grandbaby, which provided the time to actually read.

Calling (The Chronicles of Tevenar) by Angela Holder

Elkan wants to become a farmer then he gets a letter. The Mother has chosen him to become an apprentice Wizard. If he becomes an apprentice he can use (her) powers to heal the people of Tevenar. But Elkan's Father does not like Wizards, because they had failed him in his time of need. Elkan wants to join the Wizards' Guild. He really wants to serve the Mother even if it displeases his father.

Elkan is brave and is willing to travel and face danger to become and apprentice. He is very likable, they story is original, the plot moves at a steady pace, they characters are well developed. I found Calling to be quite enjoyable and feel that fantasy lovers will enjoy it as well.… (meer)
