Luther Hughes’ collection, A Shiver in the Leaves provides a kaleidoscopic, at times fragmentary, always compelling view of his identity as a gay Black man, and the complexities of a layered sense of identity in a world that would much rather not engage with him in any of his iterations. A Shiver In The Leaves is a thought provoking poetry collection that covers a host of difficult topics. Luther Hughes’ writing creates stark mental images for the reader. I was riveted with the subject matters of being gay, being Black, police interaction, etc. This is a great poetry book.
