Beyond Reach (DI Joe Faraday) door Graham Hurley
I like DI Joe Faraday - a lot. He comes over as real, fallible, likeable and whilst good at his job, as exhausted and dispirited as most of us are when things simply get too much. As ever, a good story, well told, with a cast of believable characters.
I was sorry to say 'Goodbye' to Joe Faraday, even sorrier when I realised there's no chance of his making a come-back. Still, Jimmy Suttle and his strained home-life seems after all to be quite an acceptable substitute. As interesting as his battles to find out whether a murder has been committed, or whether there's simply been an unfortunate accident is the story of his wife's disenchantment with his dreams of country life. An absorbing read
As ever, there are several plotlines: the death of a colleague in a head-on collision, bitter news for the detective who doesn't play by the rules Paul Winter , and testing times for a disgraced gynagologist. Plot and characters are carefully drawn and realised. As ever, a rattling good read, perfect for the wee small hours when sleep seems impossible.
This is the first Graham Hurley book I've read in which Joe Faraday isn't the hero. Instead, it's former bit-parter DI Jimmy Suttle. He's taken a job in the West Country and living out in the sticks has cause his marriage to break down just before the story opens.
Here is a fast-paced thriller in which three apparently unconnected killings do have in some way to be linked. Here is the story of a still-married couple as they get used to living their separate lives, and of Jimmy's friendship with his lodger that goes distressingly wrong. It's a really engaging fast-paced police procedural with added human interest. A good read.… (meer)
