Zora Neale Hurston was born in 1901 in Eatonville, Fla. She left home at the age of 17, finished high school in Baltimore, and went on to study at Howard University, Barnard College, and Columbia University before becoming one of the most prolific writers in the Harlem Renaissance. Her works toon meer included novels, essays, plays, and studies in folklore and anthropology. Her most productive years were the 1930s and early 1940s. It was during those years that she wrote her autobiography Dust Tracks on a Road, worked with the Federal Writers Project in Florida, received a Guggenheim fellowship, and wrote four novels. She is most remembered for her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, published in 1937. In 2018, her previously unpublished work, Barracoon: The Story of the Last Black Cargo, was published. She died penniless and in obscurity in 1960 and was buried in an unmarked grave. In 1973, her grave was rediscovered and marked and her novels and autobiography have since been reprinted. Elke natie verheerlijkt graag haar historische helden maar zwijgt liever over de zwarte bladzijden die ze geschreven heeft. Duitsers hebben het moeilijk om over beide wereldoorlogen te praten, Belgen en Nederlanders vermelden ook niet graag alle aspecten uit hun koloniaal verleden. Zo ook de Verenigde Staten van Amerika. Naast het uitroeien van de inheemse bevolking (wij noemen ze in hun totaliteit ’de indianen’) voltrok er zich een ander, bijna 450 jaar durend, drama: de gevangenneming, deportatie en het tot slaven maken van Afrikanen.
Om direct de omvang weer te geven van deze mensenhandel (waarbij de naamgeving voor de Amerikanen toen niet correct was want Afrikanen werden nooit als mensen aanzien, wel als koopwaar en eigendom): tot 1860 werden meer dan 12 miljoen Afrikanen via de trans-Atlantische route naar Amerika verscheept. Tijdens deze langdurende periode van onderdrukking en uitbuiting werd nooit een getuigenis genoteerd. Totdat begin vorige eeuw Zora Neale Hurston het verhaal van de toen oude Oluale Kossola opschrijft.
Zoals quasi alle slaven was hij ongeletterd maar wel blij verrast zijn ellende te mogen delen met een witte vrouw. Hij wou graag aan iedereen laten weten wat hem was aangedaan tijdens zijn jaren van slavernij en wat hij en zijn gezin moesten ondergaan tijdens de jaren na de afschaffing van de slavernij.
Dit unieke historische document werd pas in 2017 uitgegeven en in 2019 vertaald naar het Nederlands. Het helpt ons niet te vergeten waartoe onderdrukking en uitbuiting kan leiden. Laat ons niet vergeten wat ons eigen koloniaal verleden voor de inheemse bevolking betekende en zorgen dat deze horror zich nooit meer herhaalt .… (meer)
