I like these Orphan X books although I don't think they are perfect. Mostly I like heroes who are Bond-style indestructible and infallible and Evan Smoak fits the description. Although Evan has been trained to work alone, it's impossible to be invisible and alone in the real world and in the course of maintaining a pretend normal life, Evan has met Mia and her son Peter who live in his building and he has begun to care for them. This leads to him being captured by the spooky government services and coerced into working for them again. The moral pivot of the book is whether Evan will carry out assassinations just because he's told to.

This may not be the strongest Orphan X book but it moves along quickly and moves Evan's story forward.

I received a review copy of this book from the publisher through Net Galley.

Usually I fall into Gregg Hurwitz’s Orphan X books. I needed a push on this one and I am thinking it had everything to do with the subject matter.

AI - the people who conjure it, who understand how to weaponize it and use it to harm and destroy without any pause, thought, care or concern. Because they can and because they will, It is terrifying and it is all laid out with corrupted logic in Lone Wolf.

There are several story lines that sometimes merge but mostly keep Evan Smoak, The Nowhere Man, on the edge every minute. Familial interactions are a whole new twist along with a deadly female adversary who is pushing Evan to Hell and back. Joey Morales, IT person extraordinaire, plays a larger role with many more pages dedicated to where she is in her seventeenth year and just how sophomoric a computer genius can behave. Bottom line - she’s scared, terrified of losing the only person “who gets her”.

Evan is going through his own pile of crap and it it taking him apart piece by piece. This is not how he has ever been portrayed and I would like to say that it enhances his humanity but it doesn’t - it just makes him like the rest of us but with a different skill set - disappointed and confused and completely relatable.

An Orphan X book means, clear out everything that needs doing because once you open the book you are not putting it down and Lone Wolf was no different except that brought in a worthy adversary. There was a very tight chess game going on and at times I wondered if Hurwitz’s was thinking about writing an ending to to this series. Extremely well done while exploring the scary topics of today. Many thanks to Minotaur Books and NetGalley for a copy.

Bodies are piling pile up. "Orphan X", who is now Evan Smoak, is the "Nowhere Man". People, mostly strangers, can call him on his untraceable phone to ask for his help if they are in desperate trouble. His father figure, Jack Johns, calls him shortly before stepping out of a flying helicopter to his death. Seems that might have been a little on the "too late" side. Our Evan receives Jack’s before -"the big step"- note about a “final mission” to get a “package” that turns out to be Joey, a testy teenage girl and fellow "Orphan" who to thank him for his efforts...immediately tries to kill him. Meanwhile, Charles Van Sciver, Director of the "Orphan" Program, is chomping at the bit on his own mission. His “top priority is to stamp out wayward "Orphans,” especially "Orphan X"... the headaches that escaped from the program. Evan obsesses about killing Van Sciver and everyone else who helped kill Jack. Rivers of blood gush toward a showdown. Joey becomes Evan’s partner in crime... but I had already figured that she was becoming an “inconvenient aggravation". Mission almost accomplished when at the very moment that Evan’s universe would consist of a single goal, namely the annihilation of Charles Van Sciver...we receive the 90% possibility that there may be a sequel with Van Sciver’s taunt to Evan, “You have no idea, do you? How high it goes?” ! That lets us believe that someone really wants Evan dead. Evan is way too busy for a love life. Afterall slaughtering is hard work and extremely time consuming, although he has an almost-could be-girlfriend...the D.A., Mia Hall. There was another woman that comes on to him, but he didn't have time to pay much attention to her, as he “needed to get food", and then he totally had more people to kill. He does have priorities after all. Some characters will be familiar to readers of the series, such as Van Sciver and the deadly Candy McClure. My favorite is the gangster "Freeway", who has a tattooed eyeball. Never saw one of those but it sounded interesting....and painful. Other than this one, I only read the first book before. If you like science fiction or adventure books you will probably eat this series up and anxiously await the next "Orphan X" offering. If not a fan of those genera's, then maybe.... but as another reviewer said, "it's just bloody good fun"!… (meer)

Evan Smoak, once a black ops assassin, is now a person who helps anyone in trouble. But this mission is not like any other he has ever taken part in. He is helping to find a dog. You heard me, a lost dog. But this dog leads to an unusual murder and Evan may have finally met his match with this assassin.

Orphan X is truly one of the best characters on the market. He is a cross between Jack Reacher and Batman.

I loved finding out about Evan’s family in this one and how it affected him! Makes me see a whole new side of this character!

Now, this is part of a series. I have read them all. They are stand alone. However, this one did not really explain his past. And it is a good, strange, weird past. So, read this but go back and pick up all of them. You won’t be sorry!

I just love Orphan X. And there cannot be a better narrator than Scott Brick. He is the best ever! He makes Orphan X come alive.

Need a great, action packed series…THIS IS IT! Grab your copy today.

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.
