As I was reading this book, I was reminded of my love of the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Beneath the Slashings is similar to those books, as it is set around the same era and it's told from a young girl's point of view. Grace is a girl to admire. Having lost her mother when she was six years old and then been separated from her father for three years while he served in the Civil War, she has had a lot of sorrow in her life and reasons to be afraid. When her Pa returns from the war, she learns that they will be leaving the comfort and safety of home to live and work in a lumber camp. Her fears multiply and an animosity toward her father, not present before, develops. The book has a nice little mystery to keep the reader guessing, but it's Grace who really steals the show. As she lives and works among all the men of the camp, she learns to be more trusting. She also learns to do many things she never thought she could when she meets an old Ottawa woman. Ultimately, Grace grows up a lot in her time at the camp and her life is better for it.

Beneath the Slashings was a great read for me, not only because of what I said above, but because it is set in my beloved home state of Michigan. Hearing mention of Saginaw county, Manistee, and Grand Rapids brings me back to what I loved learning about Michigan when I was a child. In all, this book is a great coming of age story for the middle grades that teaches the reader about courage and friendship.

Beneath the Slashings by Michelle Isenhoff is the third book in a trilogy. The books in the series are loosely related. Still, I was worried that because I hadn’t read the others that I would be confused. This was not the case! It is definitely a book that can be read without reading the others in the series. Grace was unhappy through part of the book, and I wished I could have been her friend at the camp. Sometimes when we are being stubborn and not letting the fun in, we need someone to set us straight. I enjoyed watching Grace get out of her funk. One of her favorite pastimes was reading, just like me. I loved seeing the way reading was spotlighted in the book. I would definitely recommend this book to fourth- eighth graders. I liked the historical aspects of the book. Although I have read some books that take place during the Civil War or after it ended- I had never read a book about a logging camp. I even learned what slashings are- and they were not what I expected! This book makes history come to life! I look forward to reading another book by this author soon.… (meer)

Another excellent entry in the Mountain triilogy. Very engaging story that takes us through the story of Li Min's parentage. What was the world like for Li Min's parents? What was their involvement with the Dragon menace Ju Long? The entire series is a very good story, definitely suggested reading.

Another great set of stories by Michelle Isenhoff. The main Elle Wood stories are very engaging but you wonder about the other key characters that you are drawn into in the main stories. What happened to Lizzie, Jack and Jovie when they were out of the main story line? These stories fill in the blanks and are as well done as the main stories. I now know the "rest of the story" to quote an old favorite radio show. A definite read for anyone who has read the main stories.
