In this interesting little book Anne Roller Issler tells all about Robert Louis Stevenson's year in California. The year was 1880. Stevenson and his new bride Fanny spent some time in San Francisco but most of the story took place in the abandoned silver mining district of Silverado near Calistoga in the upper Napa Valley. Stevenson and Fanny were nearly broke and looking for a place to stay with little or no rent. This they found in the abandoned miners quarters at the Silverado Mine. Robert Louis Stevenson, or RLS as the author sometimes called him, was in poor health and hope the warm dry climate would help him recover his health. While staying at the mine RLS did the research that resulted in his book The Silverado Squatters published in 1897. The author, Issler, made a career out of Robert Louis Stevenson's time in California. For a time she was curator of the Stevenson House Museum in Monterey. Stevenson at Silverado was first published in 1939 and a revised second edition came out in 1959. I read a paperback copy of the 1974 printing.… (meer)
