C. S. Johnson

My traditional (twice so far) end-of-the-year novella read by the wonderful C.S. Johnson. The only thing bad about reading her novellas is usually I want them longer, but she has other great work to satisfy that need. The beginning is a nice little opening that you see what's coming down the road with a simple twist that gives us our character knight. It's a nice, little romantic jaunt that keeps just enough of the ye ol' knight symbolism without it becoming shmaltzy - in a bad way. Always a pleasure especially for the romantic in all of us men who want to be knights as well. Final Grade - B+… (meer)

Probably the most egotistical, self-centered, obnoxious protagonist I can remember. There are some redeeming characteristics but "Hammy" "Humdinger" whatever you want to call him is annoying with a side order of smug on top. The writing is also sprinkled with an author's attempts at using a Thesaurus without really knowing what is the right word as opposed to the close to correct word. Not often, say, every 20 to 50 pages you'll find another one. I think this is supposed to be an attempt at making a fantasy using some Christian symobolism...maybe...I don't know. Fallen angels getting some kind of a second chance? Love as a theme of growth from the perspective of someone who once knew better. And, yes, somehow, I did like the series...even as I gritted my teeth from time to time.… (meer)

This was the best book in the trilogy in my opinion. Johnson seems to have hit her stride, and wraps up the series wonderfully. Eleanora is back, and life seems to finally be going her way...mostly. This book had the fastest pacing in the series I think, with a lot of suspense woven in, even as secrets are brought into the light. There are twists, turns, and revelations, as the characters we've come to know so well race against the clock in one final effort to make sure there's a happily ever after. I have to admit, I regret that I'm leaving this series behind. You'll definitely want to read books one and two before you dive into this page-turning conclusion.… (meer)
