This book is a comprehensive all-in-one guide that anyone suffering from Multiple Sclerosis, as well as family members and friends of those with ms, care givers, or anyone wanting to find out more information on this complex disease. It covers a wide range of topics from diagnosis and symptoms of the disease, prognosis, and a myriad of subjects that can be overwhelming to those with ms; including family life, social life, the workplace, sex and childbearing. It also includes chapters covering insurances (mainly health) and financial planning.

While, as with all reference manuals, the material is now dated; yet there is still a ton of useful and educational information, as well as contact information for services and and more information. Of course there will have been many updates on the latest treatments and medications, and current health insurance options.

Throughout the years, I have had several friends and neighbors who had ms. I wish I had read this volume back when I first knew them, as it gave me a much more thorough and broad understanding of their condition and how it affects their lives.

Multiple sclerosis is a mysterious disease affecting the brain and spinal cord. It's an autoimmune disease like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis and the cause is unknown. It involves the destruction of the protective coating on nerves in the brain and spinal cord, causing the brain's electrical signals to be disrupted. The symptoms, their severity and course of MS vary, depending on the location of the nerve damage. Early symptoms include muscle weakness, lack of coordination, vision problems and eventually there are cognitive problems.
This book, by Dr. Rosalind Kalb, is one of the most useful books one could find and is written in a straightforward, easy-to-read style. There might be more information than one could want, but the question and answer format makes it easy to dip into the book at various points and read as much as needed at a particular time. In fact, reading it cover to cover would be impossible in my opinion. It is divided into four parts, each of which is a collection of articles by specialists in their field, covering topics ranging from alternative therapies, sexual dysfunction, and navigating insurance and work issues. It will help a patient and his/her family cope with the disease, be better able to make financial decisions and develop plans for daily life.

For anyone who has been diagnosed with MS -- or anyone with a family member or close friend who has been diagnosed -- this book is an excellent resource. In a clear question-and-answer format, it covers just about every aspect of life with MS. That includes emotional and psychological issues to legal questions, about employment and financial planning. And it's written by experts for laypeople, so you feel comfortable that you can rely on the information -- and understand it. It's really a reference work, not something you are likely to sit down and read cover to cover. But if you have a question, or an area of life with MS that you'd like to know more about, this is the first book I would consult.… (meer)

Medical books typically fall into two categories in my opinion. so overly medical that they don't make sense to the typical reader and those so simple that they are dangerous. This book falls into the third category, medical books that are actually useful and informative. Multiple sclerosis is described in easily understandable language and it makes sense when you are living with MS or someone who has MS. The discussion of symptoms and treatments is well done. The question and answer format allows you to zero in on the actual events you live with or are afraid you might have to live with. Fear, that is the key to my positive review. So much of living with MS is the fear of what might be that it is easy to miss the fact that one can actually live with the reality of MS and live happily when one understands the disease. My wife and I live with her MS everyday and the topics covered in this book are exactly the topics that help us ensure that we live a happy life despite what MS may or may not conspire to visit on us. Knowledge always make it easier to deal with whatever problems you have to face. I highly recommend this book for anyone with MS, for anyone who has a family member with MS, or anyone who is afraid that they might have to deal with MS.… (meer)
