Some of Japan's most important cultural values are reflected in the urban planning of its cities. Tokyo is world-renowned as a city of modern architectural design, employing much that is experimental as well as new. In doing so, Tokyo like many cities in Japan, is in a continuous state of demolishing and rebuilding. This is in direct contrast to many of the great cities of the West which have made conscious efforts to preserve their architectural past. The video explores this phenomenon of tearing down the old and building anew in Japan and contrasts this with very dissimilar ideas that are held in the West.… (meer)

An abridged history of the last 1,200 years of Japanese literature, this book is crammed with information and doesn't go in-depth on any single topic. A decent overview, but a dry one.

Has a rather self-consciously ideological approach, but useful as giving an alternative interpretation differing from Keene and some other western scholars
