This author is known for her award winning website called “Booktalks – Quick and Simple (nancykeane.com/booktalks) and has a wiki about book lists. As such both of these books are quite up to date in their lists. She has taken the time to listen to both teachers and librarians as well as online discussions in developing these lists. She suggests other ways that the lists might be of use, including book displays (use these lists to check your collection), teacher handouts, posters, etc. Additionally, she divides the books up into manageable subject areas with more thematic detail in each – for instance – she notes that things like “character education/values” can be divided up into smaller chunks that may fit a situation more precisely. She also makes sure the professional is aware of when books fit well with certain ages and she includes Lexile levels in the children’s one. In the teen collection, she often refers to a popular author and what to read that is similar to what has been read. The teen one is especially up to date as she refers to things like the Hunger Games series. Cover illustrations indicate the possibility of electronic reading on the teen one, but not on the children’s one. Why?

So many of these titles are available electronically – and that is forever changing. Bottom line: Use these to develop a relevant, timely collection and be sure to check what might come in as an e-book. Recommended.
