This is a bruising, macho tale of lobsterman in Maine trying to manage their survival, threatened with a glut of product and changing global demand. In this nameless fishing village, there's pretty much hardship, stubborn pride, and misery 24/7. The story begins with a non-accidental death and ends with the shattering of most of the lives built around the local lobster pound. This is one of those books that belongs to the tell, don't show form of writing. The author, who has worked on television and radio, has also absorbed the main rule of writing for broadcast news: "Tell 'em, tell 'em, and tell 'em again." It's not that his ideas are wrong-headed, it's that he makes sweeping generalizations over and over. Perhaps the book gets better - I couldn't make it past the second chapter.
