A decent concise summary of the war at sea from a British perspective. No longer revolutionary in any way (if it ever was) it's none-the-less either useful primer for anyone with only a scant understanding of the topic or a decent easy enough read for the nerds amongst us.

Oh and Kemp obviously thinks Cunningham's great, but I can't really argue with him on that one.

Written in the 1950's as an unofficial history of the Royal Navy during WWII, it does not include anything about "Ultra" which was still secret. With that in mind the book is still great reading. It is not uncritical of decisions made, particularly in regard to airpower and how it affected naval operations. Many of the great actions of the naval war are included and for that I think it's most readable. It told me things I did not know such as the navy thought it possible that only around 24,000 men could be taken out of Dunkirk, in the event they took out more men nearly every day.
