Helen Klaben Kahn was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 18, 1941. At the age of 20, she drove to Alaska and settled in Fairbanks, where she worked for the Bureau of Land Management as a draftswoman and took some mining classes at the University of Alaska. In 1963, she and aircraft mechanic toon meer Ralph Flores started on their journey to San Francisco in a single-engine airplane. The plane crashed into a desolate, forested stretch of a mountainside near the Yukon-British Columbia border. Flores was an inexperienced pilot and did not bring adequate food or basic survival gear like an ax, sleeping bags, or a rifle. They both survived the crash and endured 49 days of subzero temperatures before being rescued on March 24. Her book, Hey, I'm Alive written with Beth Day, was published in 1964 and was adapted into an ABC television movie. Klaben Kahn also told her story on an episode of the game show To Tell the Truth. She was educated at Hunter College and Columbia University. She promoted stocks at a brokerage, worked for a book publisher, and taught survival skills to the Girl Scouts, schools and other groups. Sally Struthers played Helen Klaben in the 1975 movie and all I remember was that they ate toothpaste to stay alive. When I plucked this gem off my library shelf, I had no idea that my life would be effected in less that 200 pages. Helen’s tale of her life before, during and after the plane-crash and subsequent 49 days in the frozen Yukon, caused me to do some real soul-searching and gave me a renewed appreciation for all that I have, especially my faith...SMILE!!!… (meer)
