Elisa Kleven

This book, Sun Bread by Elisa Kleven, tells the story of a community in winter who is missing the sun. The Baker decides that because the sun will not come out she will bake some bread that will bring warmth and light. While in the oven, the sun grows and grows until it is so large that it fills the whole town with its smell. The community comes together to enjoy the bread, which brings happiness and light back into their community. Because their celebrating creates such a clamor, the real sun comes out to see what is going on and with it comes light and warmth for the whole community.
I would use this book in a read aloud to introduce the importance of the sun and its impacts on the earth. Toward the end of the book when the sun comes out, the author tells some effects of the sun and this book would be a good introduction to a unit on the impact of the sun on the earth.… (meer)
