Steve Kowit developed his craft in New York's Lower East Side poetry scene in the early 1960s and later among California's Beat poets. Celebrated for his readings and dynamic poetry workshops, he taught at West Coast colleges and made a home in the Southern California backcountry near the Mexican toon meer border with his wife, Mary. He published twelve volumes of poetry, and his work appeared in numerous anthologies and magazines, including the Los Angeles Times, the New Yorker, Ploughshares, the Sun, and Yoga journal. Among his awards are a National Endowment fellowship, two Pushcart Prizes, and the 2006 Tampa Review Poetry Prize. toon minder
