The internet before the World Wide Web, when it seemed to be little more than a glorified remote file store with misplaced text files to discover.
Man, this thing was like a view over the horizon when I got a copy (third edition) in 1993. Its list of public-accessible FTP sites and telnet servers was likea starving man reading the menu from a four-star restaurant.
I used a Vax acount at Boston College to visit as many of these things as I could, regardless of what they offfered. The Drosophilia database? Sure! Cool! The Youngstown (OH) Freenet via telnet? Great, I spent lots of time there. "Zen and the Art of the Internet" in PostScript? Great, I can print it out...Wait, why is that angry man emerging from the print room with 700 sheets of paper?
