Ivan Kushchevsky (1847–1876)

This is a very little known author and novel - I am the only owner of it on LT, there are no reviews on Amazon and the author is completely unknown to Wikipedia. This was the only significant work he wrote before dying of ill health, poverty and alcoholism at the age of 27 in 1876, but even so such obscurity is unexpected; Lermontov also died at the same age and is only really famous for one, much better known, novel. Considering the author's miserable life, the tone of the novel is very light hearted. Indeed, this was part of the problem for me; I enjoyed the light- heartedness at first, but became disinterested for its superficiality and gave up half way through. Rather an oddity in 19th century Russian literature. No rating.… (meer)
