Chaney Kwak

Chaney Kwak is travelling on the Viking Sky. He’s not your typical cruise-ship traveller; he’s there in the capacity of travel writer. This particular trip, in March 2019, gives him the story of a lifetime: the ship loses power and nearly goes aground in a treacherous stretch of Norwegian waters. During this emergency, Kwak thinks back on his life, his family history, and his relationship with Hannes, which also seems to be on the rocks. I’ve rated this a 3.5 but it might be more of a 3.75. It’s on the short side, but probably just the right length for the story Kwak was telling. He tells the story vividly and candidly, and I liked too that the story followed up on people after the incident to see what had happened to them.… (meer)

The author is a travel writer and in March, 2019 was on an Arctic Cruise on the Viking Sky when the ship lost power in a violent storm. Many of the passengers were evacuated from the ship, but the author was among those who had to be left on the disabled ship as it was battered by 50 foot waves for many hours, drifting toward the treacherous rocks on the northern Norwegian coast. Over the course of more than a day, he contemplates ending an unsatisfactory relationship with his partner of 20 years.
The subject description of this book made it sound like it could have been an exciting, thrilling adventure story, a learning experience or something life changing, but it wasn't. The author turned it into a mundane, boring book, with lots of whiney parts.
Not recommended.
