Edward John Larson (born in 1953) is an American historian and legal scholar. He is University Professor of history and holds the Hugh & Hazel Darling Chair in Law at Pepperdine University. He received the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for History for his book Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Trial and toon meer America's Continuing Debate Over Science and Religion. The book argues that Inherit the Wind (both the play and the movie) misrepresented the actual Scopes Trial. Larson was born in Mansfield, Ohio, and attended Mansfield public schools. He graduated from Williams College and received his law degree from Harvard University and his Ph.D. in the history of science from the University of Wisconsin--Madison. In 2004, Larson received an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from The Ohio State University. He held the Fulbright Program's John Adams Chair in American Studies in 2000-2001. In "De proeftuin van de evolutie" wordt de geschiedenis van de Galapagoseilanden beschreven. De bekendste bezoeker aan de Galapagoseilanden was natuurlijk Charles Darwin, die hier in 1935 het idee opdeed voor zijn evolutietheorie. Voor Darwin werd de archipel gezien als een desolaat oord, waar zelfs nauwelijks zoet water aanwezig was. Na de komst van Darwin kwamen hier steeds meer onderzoekers voor het verzamelen van soorten (met name de enorme landschildpadden en allerlei vogels). In het boek komen tal van onderzoekers naar voren. Tegenwoordig zijn de Galapagoseilanden vooral een paradijs voor toeristen. Ik vond het boek weinig interessant. Zelfs aan iemand die de Galapagoseilanden gaat bezoeken of al bezocht heeft zou ik het boek niet willen aanraden. In plaats daarvan kun je beter een mooie dvd kopen met opnamen van de dierenwereld op de eilanden.… (meer)
