Surprisingly such a short read and a very easy one so I would recommend it to younger readers although they may not understand the whole message at first.

The illustrations are simple yet strong while still being grayscale. The best of all the pictures are those of the crane which is formed with so much strong detail yet gentle enough to exude a soft reverent grace for the bird. When compared to the Japanese dress and faces of the human characters it is probably the most realistic of the subjects.

And it the emotional depth of this story that touched me. It is amazing how greedy and selfish the magician was. For one who was the greatest magician in the world he lacked true wisdom but he is like every person, especially parents or sometimes lovers. The crane who was just made from paper had the wisdom of ages while being an eye-opener.

Such a beautiful book and one I proudly add to my collection.....

This genre would probably be best put into the category of modern fantasy, because even though it is not a total fantasy book. The reason it is fantasy is because there would be no way that an old woman could knit a blanket that would cover the entire town and go out the door and cover the husband and the people. The story does a good job of telling how things can get out of hand if it is not under control to begin with, but this specific scenario would not be possible in real life. The characters are believable, but the plot itself is not and could only exist in imagination, especially when they cut up the huge blanket to give to the townspeople.

The media that is used looks like charcoal, graphite pencil, and perhaps some pen work. It is very detailed, with lots of shading and contrasting lines. I like the various ways in which the mediums are used and how the author demonstrates the predicaments the huge blanket causes, simply by the way she uses the pencil lines and shadows.
