This is horror, but in a way I wasn't anticipating. I thought it would be about the monster in the mental hospital, but it's more about the monster that is the system, of the mental hospital, of racism and classism, of oppression in general. I was furious with the injustice of the first part of this book, and gradually shifted into resignation towards the end. I think this could have been a little shorter to keep the momentum going, but it was still excellent.
What a neat story, I like that the characters are unusual, and either tuned into something supernatural, or dancing between the realities of their minds. Our narrator is likely unreliable, so it's hard to say.
I've not read a lot of Lovecraft, and didn't know this book was an answer to one of the Lovecraft stories till I read a review here on Goodreads; so now I'm going to read the Lovecraft story.
Not knowing that, I really got into this story, though I found some of the character transformations a bit of a surprise. The character of Black Tom was compelling, and his early story interesting. As I said, his transformation at the end was a bit of a puzzle; maybe Lovecraft can help me.

A dark treatment of the changeling trope (although, of course, it’s a dark kind of story to begin with), well told and with an interesting twist on the relevant mythology. I was worried that it would be too grim, but it turned out to be an excellent yarn.… (meer)
