Lavender sets the stage with a lucid account of the imperial rivalries between England, Spain, France, and the United States, and their role in Thomas Jefferson's decision to sponsor an expedition that might strengthen the young country's claims to lands it had purchased but never seen.

Bent's Fort was a landmark of the American frontier, a huge private fort on the upper Arkansas River in present southeastern Colorado. Established by the adventurers Charles and William Bent, it stood until 1849 as the center of the Indian trade of the central plains. David Lavender's chronicle of these men and their part in the opening of the West has been conceded a place beside the works of Parkman and Prescott.

Mostly good anecdotal history of the "Big Divide" area of the mountain states. I found some errors though : like "Jake Slade" instead of Jack Slade, etc. Was written in 1948 so it's a bit old. Interesting stories about miners and railroads, etc.

well done research like all of David Lavender's books, good use of quotes from travelers journals. The background was maybe too much, began with the beginning of the fur trade in New France rather than the beginning of the overland trails. On the other hand he was right that the Westward Movement began with fur trade and the fur trade began with the French.

One very interesting point was the many times that South Pass was discovered and forgotten again before it became the main way over the Rockies.… (meer)
