Lady Lawrence (1879–1976)

Lady Lawrence, née Jane Rosamond Napier, was a member of an aristocratic Scottish family descended from King Charles II. Her parents were Col. Edward Napier and his wife Marthe Louise Buddicom. She became a popular novelist and in 1914, married Henry Staveley Lawrence, a British civil servant and colonial administrator in India. She accompanied him back to India, where she chronicled life in the remote areas of the country during the waning days of the British Raj. Her memoir Indian Embers was published in 1949. Her husband was knighted, making her Lady Lawrence. In 1952, she completed a critically acclaimed biography of her famous forebear in British Indian, Lt.-Gen. Sir Charles James Napier.
