To begin with, I thought that most of her objects were just plain ugly. I also thought that most of them were knit on too small needles. This meant I wasn't really interested in copying her techniques.

I also found many of the photos designed to look artistic, but not to illustrate the technique being used.

Whether or not it is fair to use only US needle sizes in a book meant for the US market with a short mention that there are charts available on the web can be argued about. That the German edition stuck with that is unforgivable in my opinion. At the very, very least the German edition should have a chart. Really each mention of needle size should have included the metric needle size. I've just noticed that the book is originally UK. Translator obviously didn't notice, as that is a third needle size system, that is probably what the numbers are. No, they are US. Should NOT have been used exclusively in a UK published book either.

I was probably the wrong reader for this book. I don't see much point in ugly 'artistic' works. I think craft objects should try to be both beautiful and useful. If 'art' means being neither, I'll stick with 'craft'.… (meer)
