Shawn Levy was educated at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of California, Irvine. He has been writing for The Oregonian since 1992. Before that, he was a senior editor of American Film magazine and an associate editor of Boxoffice magazine. He has written about film, pop culture, toon meer books and sports for numerous publications including the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Guardian of London, the Independent of London, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Village Voice, and the Hollywood Reporter. - Shawn Levy is a Portland, Oregon, author, critic, teacher, and community volunteer. From 1992 until 2013, he wrote for The Oregonian serving as Film Critic from 1997 to 2012. Prior to that, he was Senior Editor of the late, great American Film magazine and prior to that Associate Editor of Boxoffice magazine. He reviewed movies for KGW-TV from 2009 to 2016.
He has written about film, pop culture, books and sports for the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Guardian of London, the Independent of London, the San Francisco Chronicle, Movieline, Film Comment, Sight and Sound, Premiere, the Village Voice the Hollywood Reporter, Portland Monthly, the Black Rock Beacon, and many other publications.
A native of New York City, he was educated at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of California, Irvine. He serves on the board of Operation Pitch Invasion, a not-for-profit group dedicated to filling recreation deserts with new and restored soccer fields and futsal courts. Levy's "The Castle on Sunset" offers a well-researched deep dive into the history of this Los Angeles land mark. The book covers all of the major changes of ownership, renovations and restorations, in addition to the colourful array of guests, and associated scandals. An interesting look at one part of the checkered history of tinsel town.
Mostly a good biography. He was very complicated but mostly a good and giving person.
This was an interesting read about a building I knew relatively little about.

Merged review:
Interesting history of a place and how it did and did not change as Hollywood and it’s inhabitants did. Glad that the Belushi section was minimal. Enjoyed tidbits about Groucho , Duke Ellington and e en some famed people I’d never heard of.… (meer)
