If your ancestors came New England to "Western Country" around the turn of the 19th century and after the War of 1812 then this is the genealogy book for you. My ancestor settled in Niagara County New York just after the war ended in 1815 and took up land in what was then called the Holland Purchase. The land was granted on a long-term, interest-free loan but unbeknownst to him and all the other settlers it was a ruse. They cleared the land and did all the hard work whereupon the loans were called. They couldn't pay so moved on (to Michigan) and their land was sold to wealthy landowners just as the Erie Canal was pushed through.… (meer)
