Maybe around 1990 my brother the musician got it into his head that they had to do a show about Kreisler. Would I write it? His idea was that Kreisler had come to Australia a number of times and there just had to be stories out there in the press or by talking to people that could be turned into a production.

This was the book that inspired Bernard and it couldn't be more different than the insipid Wiki article on Kreisler. He loved the violin, he loved having fun.

For me one anecdote stood out. In his youth in Austria a little group of violinists, all brilliant, regularly got together to play. They all wanted to take second violin so that they could hear a great player take the first. Isn't this how life should be lived?

Lively account by a skilled journalist who came up through the ranks of the labor/liberal press in the US -- when there was such a thing -- then became an imporant witness to the rise of National Socilaism iin Europe, and became very important to two generations of serious readers as the English-language translator of the diaries of Dr. Goebbels.
