I didn't really enjoy this book that much. I liked the small town hero vs corporate greed aspect of the book but had a very hard time keeping track of the numerous characters that all seemed to run together. and the way the story jumped around made me have to backtrack on several occasions to try to figure out what was going on. I got the impression that the writer just lost interest and cut short the resolution of most of the storylines

It was an interesting story about water wars and real estate over development in a small American town. The action in the story didn’t feel that convincing as some characters were very cardboard cut outs. There might have been too many characters so most were never given enough words to develop. The ending of the daughter's exploration of her mother's absence seemed contrived and abrupt after a big buildup. While climate change was mentioned it wasn’t explored as much as it could have been given some of the underlying story. This book was difficult to finish as it was written in a confusing manner and it took a while to discern that the book was about a corporate effort to take over undeveloped desert land in the Southwest. The main character, Al Sharpe, was raising his daughter alone as his wife who was leaving him, and reportedly died in an airplane crash. However, this was disputed in the book and her death was questioned by his daughter since she may not have entered the plane with her new girlfriend, Charlie. The book dealt with the forces in the community trying to exploit the land vs Al's attempts to maintain the land in its native form . It was a difficult read and for this reason, I would not recommend it.… (meer)
